« Survival guide: The caregiver’s challenge » launch

The Regroupement launched the « Survival guide: The caregiver’s challenge » on May 27th 2004, in the room C-400 of the Université du Québec en Abitibi-Témiscamingue. This guide is a practical reference tool intended for every dependent person’s caregiver and includes two sections: the first one is a book of resources available in our area and the second one provides advice to prevent exhaustion.

This document was made possible thanks to a grant offered to the Rgroupement by the Secrétariat aux aînés. The guide’s production and research were entrusted to the Université du Québec en Abitibi-Témiscamingue’s Laboratoire de recherche pour le soutien des communautés (Laresco).

Mrs Nancy Guberman, Université du Québec social work teacher, traveled from Montreal to assist to this launch. Mrs. Guberman, who wrote the guides’ preface, came to the area in October 2002, as a guest speaker for the 1st caregiver symposium in Rouyn-Noranda. She has important knowledge in the matter as she has been studying caregivers’ day-to-day living for the past 20 years and has published several books on the subject.

Mr Daniel Thomas, UQAT teacher and researcher, and Mrs Karine Duchesne, Laresco research leader and «Survival guide» writer, also participated at the event, following the example of many community organizations and individuals concerned with caregivers’ problematic situation.
